Conquering Food Sensitivities

Because who doesn't want to feel 100%?


We're all affected by what we put into our body, but how do you know if you have a food sensitivity? And if you do, how do you pin-point it?  Here, I share my story with food sensitivities and how you can overcome yours and begin looking at food as medicine, too.

It was almost 10 years ago now that I decided to become vegetarian.  Giving up meat and fish was a decision I made simply because I didn't want GMO's, added hormones or chemicals in my body.  However, giving up dairy and gluten was a different kind of decision.  It was preventative medicine.  And now, yes, I'm vegan and gluten free.

About two and a half years ago, I gave up dairy.  As someone who suffered from chronic sinus infections, my doctor asked me to try staying away from dairy for a while to see how I felt.  Fast forward to this July, when I met with a nutritionist who pointed out that gluten is a huge migraine trigger.  I'm proud and excited to say that since these experiments, I haven't had a sinus infection or migraine.  Amazing, right?  Food is medicine and learning how your body tolerates different type can really allow you to feel like your best self.

The top five foods that people typically have sensitivities to are gluten, dairy, soy, corn and eggs.  If you're not sure why you're feeling sluggish, having digestion or congestions problems, then try cutting two out at a time for three weeks.  After that, keep a food journal and  reintroduce one at a time every four days and see if they trigger any reaction.  

If you're pretty sure you feel worse when you eat something specific like dairy, then try an elimination diet of two months.  And trust me, it's not as hard as you think it is. Instead of focusing on what you can't eat, focus on the things you can and simply say to yourself, 'that is not an option for me right now.'  Once you start feeling better, you'll be glad you stuck with it (coming from the gluten-free vegan).
