The Pro Secret to Better Brows

cara-delevingne-eyebrow-products_article_newTypically, when filling in our brows, we choose a product – shadow or liner – and get the job done. However, we’re missing a huge step that makes all the difference. LA makeup artist, Gabbi Pascua, gave us a reason for using more than one formula.

In order to make your brows look natural, refined and shaped, you need to use a two products – a liquid filler and a pencil. Start by using a liquid formula, (which is a consistency I’ve never used on my brows before) like Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color in a shade lighter than your brows, to fill in the front only where it needs to be filled by “feathering” with short brush strokes.

Then, take a pencil like NARS Brow Perfector in a darker shade and fill in from your mid brow to the ends for a “fuller, defined brow that’s not too harsh.”

Who knew? Next time you fill in your brows, remember, don’t force a shape, just fill in what’s missing and blend the two formulas with your brow brush for the most natural looking brows.

Get Perfect Brows Instantly with This New Treatment, Thanks Browhaus!

If you've been keeping up with BeautySweetSpot you know that I'm obsessed with perfecting the shape of my eyebrows and have been on a "brow plan" for a little over a year now.  The shape has gotten fuller and even longer, but I still dye them darker and there are still some sparse spots that I fill in.  To be honest, I don't think the hair will ever fill in the way I'd like it to.  I recently came across a treatment that I'm considering at the Browhaus called BrowResurrection.  Ladies, if you're looking for a brow solution, this may be for you, too. BrowResolution is for anyone with over-plucked or sparse brows.  A highly trained technician takes vegetable dye, which is all natural and acts like semi-permanent makeup, and fills in your brows by drawing on mini brow hairs.  It would be great to not have to dye and fill in my brows all the time and wake up to perfectly shaped brows every morning!

I'm thinking about going for a consultation.  First, the brow specialist draws in pencil on your brows to show you how the shape and thickness would look.  After you approve, then you choose the shade.  And of course, no pain no gain.  Right?  Before applying the dye, your eyebrows are numbed just a bit and then you'll feel a light scratching.  Not a big deal, but it's also no massage.  It's a little pricey, but lasts about two years so if you ask me, totally worth it.  I'll let you know if I go for a consultation and how it goes.

Celeb Brow Guru, Damone Roberts, Dishes on Framing Some of the Most Famous Faces

It was such a pleasure to speak with Damone Roberts.  Known as the brow guru to A-Listers such as Madonna, Rihanna, Beyonce and Megan Fox, Oprah's coined him as a "beauty therapist," and with salons in Beverly Hills and NYC, he's unstoppable.  I got the scoop on why he's the stars' go-to, DIY brow grooming tips and his latest project. You've been called a “beauty thearapist,” what does that mean?

I’ve been doing a column for and we came up with this name because women like to feel good about themselves.  Women hold back more psychologically than physically and I bring out the best version of themselves.  Things change from fashions to our age and weight and sometimes you need to let things go and bring back the best thing about yourself.

What's it like to work with such iconic women?

You see these women and they’re all icons and I grew up with posters of Madonna on my wall and now her face is in my hands.  I went to see Madonna in concert at her Blonde Ambition tour and now I’m sitting front row as her primper and friend.  All of my famous clients are like everyone else.  Once you gain their trust you're not just working for them, you become their friends.

Why is it important to have a relationship with your brow guru?

You need to find an artist you like and trust them.  Don’t be adamant about not changing your look.  You’re only hurting yourself.  Find people you trust, make sure you like their work and hand it over at a certain point.

People come to me and give me a picture of Brooke Shields, but have two eyebrow hairs.  I let them tell me what they want, but upon first look I already know what I’m going to do to them.  They trust me, but I hear them out.  The relationship I have with my clients is very important.  I love the OMG moment, right after a service when they realize how much they love their look.

What are your pointers for women who are plucking their own brows?

Less is more.  Take out one row at a time and step back to look at it.  Then go to the other side and do the same.  Never conquer your brows individually.  Then use brow gel.  It helps keep hairs in place and opens up the eye to make you look more alert and younger.

What's next for you?

I'm working with, to curate deluxe sample sized beauty products for members that get delivered monthly to their homes.  I find that there's a lot of product out there and walking into a Sephora can become very overwhelming.  This is a great way to expose people to the latest and the greatest.

Spring Clean Your Brows

Ah yes... you've heard it before, but I'm going to say it again.  Your eyes are the windows to the soul, but did you know that your brows can frame your whole face?   In between appointments it's important to keep them groomed.  I got the 411 from makeup artist and brow guru Robyn Cosio of Sally Hershberger NY and LA on how to keep them in tip top shape.  Here's how her clients Kate Bosworth, Nicole Kidman and Christina Applegate have been keeping their peepers in check:

  • Give Yourself Guidance - Don't just start plucking away.  Instead, use a pencil to fill in your desired shape so you don't end up overtweezing.
  • Add Color - Fill them in to give them an extra pop.  You want your brows to look noticeable.  If you're blonde, make them one shade darker than your natural color and if you're brunette they should be one to two shades lighter than your hair color.  Try products from Brow Diva.  They make the ultimate brow grooming kit and you can also purchase products individually.
  • Maximize Your Lashes - Of course you can add tons of mascara to compliment your newly shaped brows, but enhance your natural lashes with RapidLash, $50.  It's perfect for the summer because your natural lashes will be so long, you won't have to use mascara and worry about it running down your face on the beach.

Achieve A-List Arches

Besides the nominees, brow guru, Anastasia Soare, was a VIP at the Golden Globes this year as well.  You can credit her for the perfectly shaped arches of Julianna Margulies, Penelope Cruz, Jane Adams, Fergie, Elizabeth Moss and Jennifer Graner.

“Award Shows and red carpet events are really the perfect time to vamp up with a glam look. The stars will be very glamorous and not in everyday clothes so their brows should embody the glamour of Hollywood," remarked Anastasia.

Like her work?  Here are some tips from Anastasia on how to get red carpet brows:

  • If waxing, be sure to do it 3-6 days before an event.  After a wax your skin color can become a little lighter and if given a few days your skin will have time to calm down
  • Ask for them to be high arched and keep them somewhat full
  • Highlight the corner of the brow with a pencil

I always suggest keeping your brows in the hands of professionals, but if you can definitely maintain them at-home.  Anastasia has great brow grooming kits that contain everything you need to keep your arches in check.  Check them out here.
